Clear Thinking: Turning Ordinary Moments into Extraordinary Results Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 2,295 ratings

AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Few things will change your trajectory in life or business as much as learning to think clearly. Yet few of us recognize opportunities to think in the first place.

You might believe you’re thinking clearly in the moments that matter most. But in all likelihood, when the pressure is on, you won’t be thinking at all. And your subsequent actions will inevitably move you further from the results you ultimately seek—love, belonging, success, wealth, victory. According to Farnam Street founder Shane Parrish, we must get better at recognizing these opportunities for what they are, and deploying our cognitive ability in order to achieve the life we want.

Clear Thinking gives you the tools to recognize the moments that have the potential to transform your trajectory, and reshape how you navigate the critical space between stimulus and response. As Parrish shows, we may imagine we are the protagonists in the story of our lives. But the sad truth is, most of us run on autopilot. Our behavioral defaults, groomed by biology, evolution, and culture, are primed to run the show for us if we don’t intervene. At our worst, we react to events without reasoning, not even realizing that we’ve missed an opportunity to think at all. At our best, we recognize these moments for what they are, and apply the full capacity of our reasoning and rationality to them.

Through stories, mental models, and more, Parrish offers the missing link between behavioral science and real-life outcomes. The result is a must-have manual for optimizing decision-making, gaining competitive advantage, and living a more intentional life.

This book was lifechanging, no hyperbole. It's opened my eyes to an entire subset of strategy and frameworks and has reshaped how I think about life and work (especially work). I recommend it to most people and I'm even buying copies for family and friends. I also picked up the entire FS collection, but this is a really solid overview.

Starts great. But then it seems to be a little repetitive and vague. Still think it is a good read.

Whatever your profession or role in life, Clear Thinking provides ideas and concepts that, if implemented consistently, will transform whatever you endeavor to a level you previous would not have thought possible. It's not easy, nor is it instantaneous. But the principles of this book are consistently applied and worked, transformation results. James Clear (Atomic Habits) calls it an "indispensable guide". Strong words and a big promise, but Shane Parrish delivers. It's that good.

Most people won't do the hard work to apply the principles elucidated by Parrish. If you do, however, you can join the others who did so at the top of your profession or endeavor.

And if you apply these where it matters most -- with your family, spouse, children, friends, relationships -- multiple generations will reap the benefits. And your world will be a better place.

The book really is that good.

    Enjoy!

As I marathoned. (slowly read), passages inspired if pertinent events were happening OR lead me to think “sounds good, hope I remember it” when my life was elsewhere. Sorta like when I read the Bible in a year.
Worth the gems that struck home.

If you enjoy Shane's style of writing from the fs.blog, you'll love this book.

Here are some of my favorite takeaways and quotes:

“Many of the algorithms [default behaviors] you're running have been programmed into you by evolution, culture, ritual, your parents, and your community. Some of these algorithms help move you closer to what you want; others move you further away.”

“There is always something you can do in the moment today to better your position tomorrow. You might not be able to solve the problem, but your next action will make the situation better or worse. There is always an action you can control, however tiny, that helps you achieve progress.”

“The path to being exceptional begins when you decide to be responsible for your actions no matter the situation.”

The great thing about this book, though, is that Shane provides relatable/vulnerable stories, tips and tools to back up ideas like these and help you put them into action. Ideas like putting together your personal board of directors or creating automatic rules to avoid decision fatigue and willpower wear down.

And...I've been talking to people for years about weighing the reversibility and consequences of decisions, but never thought to put it in a simple x/y matrix (see attached photo). I love the way this guy thinks!

I am a subscriber of Shane Parrish‘s Farnam Street for multiple years and immediately bought this book when it was published. It includes so much valuable content that I highlighted vast parts of this book.

Will definitely re-read it later. Can recommend this to anyone.

I have been reading Farnam Street Blog for almost 10 years now and I regularly listen to The Knowledge Project Podcast of Shane Parrish. Can't think of anyone else who consistently spreads this kind of quality content, largely for free. A couple of years ago I also followed the program The Art of Focus, which helped me reshape my habits and manage my time in a way that pays dividends to this day.

This book provides a good summary of the insights that underpin all of his work. I like that all of the abstract/conceptual lessons in the book are followed by concrete real-life examples, which makes it easier to connect them to situations in your own life.

Some of the subjects in this book: the importance of the "small, ordinary moments" in your life and how getting those right eventually compounds in living a meaningful life; all the ways that our defaults (emotions, ego, social default and inertia) get us into trouble and how to recognize them and not let them control you; how to build strenth and learn to think clearly; self-accountability and taking radical responsibility for your decisions and behaviour; self-knowledge; self-confidence; safeguard strategies to protect yourself; how to define a problem and how to explore & evaluate possible solutions; how to learn from your decisions, etc.

If you like this book, also consider buying the series "The Great Mental Models" of the same writer. All of the books and blogposts written by Shane Parrish and his team provide content that you can read and re-read throughout your life. Each time you will find new lessons.
