The drive is great for the price, but may need attention
This review is for the Sabrent model FL-UDRV. Overall this floppy drive is great for the price, but may need attention. There are many previous reviews here that report that the drive is not able to read floppies which were written to by a different drive. An error is presented upon reading it saying something like the disk needs to be formatted. However, it is able to format and read data that itself writes. This is exactly what I have experienced with this drive model.Apparently, it is a hit-or-miss on whether you get a good drive. I have looked into the issue with my own drive and decided not to return it, but rather to fix it myself. (I used to be a computer repair technician years ago)Disclaimer: This will void the warranty. It is better to contact the manufacturer to obtain a replacement instead.Anyhow, the fix is fairly simple, but perhaps a little tedious. The head just needs to be realigned to the standard. More information can be found here: [...]I basically opened the unit (while it was unplugged) by unscrewing the single screw near the cord. I slid the upper half of the case away from the cord a few millimeters and it came open. Next, I loosened the two set screws that secure the drive motor assembly. The assembly can slide back and forth. The difficult part is to know where it should be. I had a disk with data on it that I was able to use for testing if the new alignment location was successful or not. In my situation, it needed to be pushed back about a millimeter from where it was originally. You’ll know it is getting close when it can successfully return a directory of the disk. But, that alone doesn’t mean it can read data yet. I needed to nudge it ever so slightly again and tighten the screws and I was finally successful. It took me about 3 iterations before it was able to reliably read my old disks successfully.
